Colored atlas is basically a data visualization tool that you can use your data to create maps. And it is completely free. You are able to generate maps that best suits your needs, by customizing maps. Maps are one of the best ways to visualize your data and ideas. Now you have a totally free map maker tool that you can use without any limitation. You will see how to create a map with coloredatlas in this tutorial. Choose Method To Create Your Map

To create a map with coloredatlas you have 2 options. If you have a data file, you can create your map directly with that data file (currently CSV-comma separate values is the only supported file type). If you want to learn how to create map with data file skip "CREATE MAP MANUALLY" and go directly to "CREATE MAP WITH DATA FILE" part of the tutorial. If you will not use any file you can go on "CREATE MAP MANUALLY" part.

Choose Map Template

Choose map template you want use. You can choose world map, continents or countries with different administrative division levels. Let’s choose world map as template. Select the "World" from top navigation menu. What opens is a blank world map with borders but without any colors other than default one.

Choose Fill Color

To start customizing your map, you should choose fill color from the menu or you can go on with default fill color. To change fill color you can choose any color from color palette. If you are not happy with given color options, click on "more" button on palette and you will have more options.

Color Countries

Now you have fill color chosen. You are ready to start coloring your world map. Click or tap on a country on map. You will see that, country you have clicked/tapped is turned into color you have selected. Color as many countries as you need to. If you want to color country back to default color simply click/tap again on the county. You will see that country color changed back to original color. You can change color simply choose another fill color from the color palette and keep on coloring countries until you are done.

Choose Default Color

When your are completed with coloring countries, you may want to change default color of countries (countries you did not color yet). To change default color of countries, you change default color from palette . You can keep it as it is if you are OK with default color.

Choose Background Color

Background color changes the background color of map (in world map that means oceans and seas).

Choose Border Color

Finally you can change color of borders of countries.

After you are done with all, you can simply click next button to add legend and title to your map.

Add Legend And Title

A map key or legend is included with a map to unlock it. It is crucial to have a legend for the map to make sense. But, if you are in hurry and you don’t need a title and legend for your map, you can skip this step by clicking "Next". Otherwise, you simply enter the title for your map (which can be anything describes your map like ‘GDP Per Capita Map Of World’, ‘Map of Places I Have Been’ or ‘My Fantasy World Map‘). In addition to title, you will notice that there are color - description pairs for each color you used in your map. You can fill these descriptions to tell to your map’s viewers which color represents what in your map. If you are completed this step your map is almost ready. Click "Next".

Download, Share or Save Your Map

Your map is ready! You can see a preview of your map on your screen where title and legend is added. If you think something is wrong with your map go back tp any previous map making step by clicking "Previous" button. If you think your map is complete, you can share your map in social media directly (map will be displayed under coloredatlas.com domain), download it to your computer (in png format). Or save your map in your coloredatlas account(to save your map, you need to login to get your credentials, which is required to create an account for you). When you logged in, you can see previously shared maps, save new maps, update them, edit them, use them as template etc.

To update a shared map you need to login to coloredatlas (coloredatlas is a totally free tool). In your profile you can list shared and saved maps, load and edit them.

CREATE MAP WITH DATA FILE

Choose Map Template

Choose map template you want use. You can choose world map, continents or countries with different administrative division levels. Let’s choose world map as template. Select the "World" from top navigation menu. What opens is a blank world map with borders but without any colors other than default one.

Now click on the HERE link on bottom of page.

Upload Data File

You will see CSV file upload button (currently you can only upload CSV file) to upload you data file. If you don't have a data file you can download the sample CSV file and edit it and use it. Click on upload button and browse the CSV file you want to upload and click OK.

Select Data Columns

After you have uploaded your file you will a secreen that shows first 10 rows of you data. Click on the column that has name of countries. You will see that color of the column you have clicked changed. Second, click on the values that you want to use for your map. If you did something wrong and change your selection simply click on the top buttons to reselect the column. When you are done with column selection click “FINISHED”. Until your selection is complete finished button will not be enabled.

Coloring Parameters

After you have uploaded your data file, options for coloring your map is opened. Choose number of colors to be depicted in your map.

Choose nature of your data. If you are not familiar with this part you keep the default selection or read a short description by clicking on info icon.

Select color group that you want to use in your map. You can keep the default or choose another.

Now, you should decide on color ranges for different colors. Default ranges are calculated by dividing data value range into equal chunks. If that fits for you, use default, otherwise change the values as you wish. Changes in ranges do not autmatically change map, so you need to click on “COLOR MAP” button when you are done with range adjustments.

You can follow the effects of changes you made on right. Now you can change default color for the countries or change the background color and border color. When you are done click on “NEXT” button to proceed.
